SIXTEEN

Tiny, minuscule grains of sand glide over my skin with each pass I make with my hand. I’m lying on my stomach, attempting to tan the back side of my body. I’m not lying on a towel, and the damp sand has managed to sneak its way into every crevice.

I’m resting on my elbows, watching the waves roll in and out, paying attention to every detail. There are only a few more days left of the reunion and part of me feels as if I haven’t done much. Between the constant bonfires Miles insists on having and the single vineyard tour we’ve been on, I can’t help feeling as if I’m missing something. It’s like I haven’t connected all the dots.

Levi has only mentioned vaguely about his history with Miles the night he dragged me into pretending to be his fiancée. I know Miles has to do with Levi’s scheme. I just don’t know how. Or why.

It’s a nagging idea I’ve been trying to let go of ever since the start of this reunion. The distance and silence between Levi and Miles speaks volumes. He didn’t tell me how it went with Miles, but I haven’t worried much about it. Any time I ask Levi about his history with Miles or even their conversations, he’s quick to stop me. I’ve simply stopped worrying about it, figuring Levi will tell me when he’s ready.

I spread my fingers across the sand and fan my hand across the surface, creating a half circle. Mindlessly, I draw lines in the half circle, making it look like a rainbow.

I yelp when the strap of my bikini tied around my back is quickly pulled back and let go, snapping onto my skin.

“Hey.” I laugh, half rolling over.

Levi lies down beside me, sporting his signature mischievous smile. “You think you’re tan enough yet?”

“No.” I laugh, rolling back onto my stomach. I continue playing with the sand. I drag my index finger through the lines. “When we go back home, I want to make sure I look like I was on vacation.”

“Technically you aren’t.”

It’s a simple statement and one of fact, but still, my stomach flips. I try not to look at Levi. Not because of regret. But because I know the feelings I’ve harbored for him since we were in high school are true.

It’s one thing to spend years building a fantasy in your head. It’s another to be living it, realizing it’s in fact not a fantasy. It’s true and real.

Although I’m confident, I know my feelings for Levi are real, I don’t know how he feels. I won’t dare ask him. Despite the fact that he’s followed through on his promise of us fucking on every piece of furniture before the reunion is over and him finding the smallest moments to touch me, I’m not convinced. It’s hard to break a years-long cycle of routine thinking when it comes to him.

That’s the issue with Levi Hawkins. Deep down, I know he’s still the same Levi I came here with.
